Barbados Going For Third Straight Win in $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes
A day full of stakes action kicks off on Saturday at Gulfstream with the 66th running of the $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes. The Grade 3 race, restricted to three-year-olds, will be run at seven furlongs and has drawn a field of nine colts and geldings.
Topping the field at morning line odds of 9-5 is Barbados for trainer Michael Tomlinson. Purchased for $340,000 as a juvenile, the bay son of Speightstown broke his maiden in his third career start and first effort on dirt. He defeated a field of nine rivals in his sophomore debut in the Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream Park and has had a bullet workout since that race. Luis Saez will remain aboard and they will break from post position seven.
Bluegrass Singer has multiple options
Second choice at 4-1 on the morning line is Bluegrass Singer for trainer Marcus Vitali. The gray son of Bluegrass Cat, owned by Crossed Sabres Farm, is also cross-entered in the Holy Bull Stakes (G2) later on the card. He has been on the board in six of his seven lifetime starts and has three career victories including a win in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes last time out. Rafael Hernandez will be aboard for the first time from post position eight.
Stanford returning off of a layoff
Also in the field at morning line odds of 6-1 is Stanford for trainer Todd Pletcher. Purchased for $550,000 as a juvenile, he broke his maiden in an impressive effort as the favorite at Monmouth Park in June. He was sixth in his stakes debut, the Saratoga Special (G2), and is returning off of a five-month freshening. He has been training forwardly for his sophomore debut and will break from the rail under jockey John Velazquez.
