Beholder, tabbed as the morning line favorite at odds of 5-2 for trainer Richard Mandella, will try to become the first mare in history to win the Pacific Classic (G1). A two-time Breeders’ Cup winner and a multiple champion, the bay mare is undefeated from three starts this year and was last seen winning the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) at Del Mar. Gary Stevens will be in the irons and they will break from post position nine as she makes a bid at history.
Catch a Flight (ARG) a big threat from off of the pace
Second choice at 9-2, Catch a Flight (ARG), also out of the Richard Mandella barn. A five-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway, he has won ten of his seventeen starts and has been on the board in all seven outings since making his North American debut. He comes into this race off of a victory in the San Diego Handicap (G2) and will be trying to break through and earn his first Grade 1 win. Flavien Prat will be aboard from post position seven.
Bayern trying to regain winning form
Also in the field at 6-1 on the morning line is Bayern for trainer Bob Baffert. A four-year-old son of Offlee Wild, he has won six of his thirteen starts and has gone winless since pulling off a minor upset in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) last November. After a pair of poor performances, he made a step forward last time out and finished third in the San Diego Handicap (G2). Rafael Bejarano will be aboard and they will break from post three.
