On Saturday at Santa Anita, the Eclipse Award winner Songbird remained undefeated with a smashing victory as the heavy favorite in the $100,000 San Ysabel Stakes (G3).
Piloted by Mike Smith and trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Songbird broke alertly and quickly opened up a one-length advantage. She proceeded to roll through fast early fractions, completing the first quarter mile in :23.20 and the half in :46.02. She continued to open up as they approached the stretch and at one point had a six-length lead. She was geared down in the stretch and finished 3 ¾ lengths in front of Land Over Sea who rallied gamely to finish second.
Six straight victories including the Breeders' Cup
As a juvenile, Songbird went undefeated from four starts and capped off her perfect season with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) over the highly-regarded Rachel’s Valentina, a daughter of the superstar filly Rachel Alexandra. Songbird made her three-year-old debut a winning one last time out in the Las Virgenes Stakes (G2). Her record is now six for six with five of those victories coming against graded stakes competition.
Next for Songbird - the Santa Anita Oaks
The bay daughter of Medaglia d’Oro was purchased for $400,000 as a yearling by Fox Hill Farm. She is out of the Florida champion filly Ivanavinalot who won six of her eighteen starts including a graded stakes. Songbird is currently pointing towards the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and will likely use the Santa Anita Oaks (G1) as her final prep for that race. The remainder of her sophomore season has not been announced and she could face male rivals at one point.
