Competitive, Wide-Open Field Set for $750,000 West Virginia Derby
Trainer Todd Pletcher will be represented by three entrants in the race including the morning line favorite, Madefromlucky, at odds of 3-1. A chestnut son of Lookin a Lucky, he has been on the board in six of his nine starts and is a three-time winner. He won the Peter Pan Stakes (G2) two starts back before finishing sixth in the Belmont Stakes (G1). He has been training steadily since then and will have Joe Bravo aboard from post position ten.
Tale of Verve back in action after Triple Crown
Second choice at 4-1 on the morning line is Tale of Verve for trainer Dallas Stewart. A bay son of Tale of Ekati bred and owned by Charles Fipke, he is trying to earn the first stakes victory of his career and has a maiden win to his credit from eight starts. He was second in the Preakness Stakes (G1) before finishing seventh in the Belmont (G1). Robby Albarado will be aboard from post position five.
Souper Colossal a consistent contender at a big price
Also in the field at morning line odds of 12-1 is longshot Souper Colossal for trainer Edward Plesa, Jr. A bay son of War Front, he has won four of his seven starts and is a three-time stakes winner. He was second in the Long Branch Stakes last time out and will be trying for his first graded stakes victory. Paco Lopez, his regular rider, will be in the irons and they will break from the outside post in the large field.
