The $60,000 Duncan F. Kenner Stakes is the first of six stakes races on the card February 21 at Fair Grounds with a field of seven set to go six furlongs on the dirt.
Delaunay is an imposing favorite at 6/5 on the morning line for trainer Tom Amoss. The eight year-old gelding has banked nearly $1.1 million in his career and hasn’t shown any signs of old age, posting the best Beyer Speed Figure of his career while winning the November 27 Thanksgiving Stakes. Last out, Delaunay handled a muddy track to win the January 3 Bonapaw Stakes by a neck over a stubborn foe. Delaunay has six wins in seven starts at Fair Grounds with a second place finish in the lone non-winning effort.
Closer should get proper set-up
Too Dim (4/1) has also shown an affinity for the Fair Grounds dirt, winning six of nine starts including two of his last three. The Edward Johnston trainee is a stout-hearted closer who should benefit from a rapid pace in the Kenner. Too Dim will once again be ridden by Miguel Mena who has been aboard for the gelding’s last three starts.
Bet Seattle on the engine
Bet Seattle (7/2) finished a length in front of Too Dim in a $62,000 allowance race January 18 at Fair Grounds, but the speedy gelding is sure to find the early fractions more contentious in the Kenner. James Graham, who was aboard Bet Seattle for that score, has opted to ride Delaunay. Francisco Torres will pick up the mount breaking from post six.
