The $60,000 Marie G. Krantz Memorial Stakes January 17 at Fair Grounds immediately precedes the featured Grade 3 LeComte, and may be every bit as good a betting race as the main attraction.
With 11 fillies and mares lined up to contest the mile and one sixteenth event on the grass, Kitten’s Dumplings could prove to be a vulnerable favorite at morning line odds of 5/2. Kitten’s Dumplings, trained by Micheal Maker, has not appeared in a race since the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Distaff where she finished ninth. While Kitten’s Dumplings has won 6 of 13 career starts, including 3 of 5 at the mile and one sixteenth distance, her late closing style could leave her with too much work to do in the stretch even if she is ready to reproduce her 2013 form after 14 and half months on the sidelines.
Eden Prairie the one to catch
4/1 second choice Eden Prairie is a legit speed horse, and used her tactical advantage to win her last start in the Blushing KD Stakes December 18 at Fair Grounds. While she is not ideally drawn at post 10, Eden Prairie figures to be the controlling speed of the race for jockey Florent Geroux, who has ridden the mare in three of her last four starts.
Every Way must overcome rust
At 9/2, Every Way is another short-priced horse that will have to overcome a layoff. The Michael Stidham trainee last raced August 31 at Del Mar finishing fifth in a minor stakes on the Polytrack. Stidhame connects at 16% with runners returning from similar layoffs.
