Sunday action at Belmont September 27 commences with the $150,000 Joseph A. Gimma Stakes in race 1, with a compact field of five juveniles set to contest the seven furlong tilt on the main track.
Restricted to New York breds, the 6/5 favorite is Super Surprise, a Todd Pletcher-trainee who remains winless after finishing third in her debut August 15 at Saratoga and returning 13 days later to run second in the Seeking the Ante Stakes at the Spa. Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez will get the leg up from Pletcher.
Frosty Margarita with big chance
Frosty Margarita (7/5) figures to make a strong bid for post time favoritism after breaking her maiden in style August 24 at Saratoga. Prior to that effort, the attractive filly finished second in her debut July 9 at Belmont Park for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. The bay daughter of Frost Giant is out of the Not For Love mare Mango Margarita and will break from post 3 under jockey Irad Ortiz.
Cameo is other half of Pletcher/Repole entry
Pletcher will also saddle Surprise Cameo (5/1) , who broke her maiden in career start number two September 7 at Saratoga following a third-place debut effort. Like Super Surprise, Surprise Cameo is also a daughter of the stallion Giant Surprise and owned by Mike Repole. Veteran jockey Joel Rosario will be in the irons with the pair set to break from post 4.
