Son of a Nut Tries to Stay Unbeaten in Indiana Governors
Son of a Nut is the 2/1 morning line favorite despite the glaring fact that he will be making his first start beyond six furlongs. The Jeff Greenhill trainee is unbeaten in four starts including wins in a pair of listed stakes events at Indiana Grand. Son of a Nut should get an uncontested lead and has superior Beyer Speed Figures of 84 and 82 in his last two outings, but the distance is the looming question mark despite Greenhill’s excellent 20% mark with runners going sprint to route.
The Devil likes two turns
Devil’s Due West (3/1) has already answered the distance question with aplomb, winning an allowance race at a mile on the turf and the $98,000 Snack Stakes in his last two starts. The Michael Weaver-trained son of Devil His Due will likely have to show new tactics, however, after the consecutive gate-to-wire wins. If jockey Fernando De La Cruz is able to find a rating gear, Devil’s Due West looms at capable and logical contender for the win.
Expect better from Academy Bay
Academy Bay (6/1) ran poorly for trainer Steve Asmussen while finishing a well-beaten fourth in the Snack Stakes behind Devil’s West, but has been much better than that effort suggested and should show up with an improved performance.
